Material
Wool is the hair of certain mammals. Most wool comes from sheep and goats, but wool is also taken from camels, llamas, and special rabbits. Wool can be spun or made into yarn. The yarn is used to weave fabric or material. The yarn of wool can also be knitted into fabric or clothing and rugs.
Wool is naturally 30% more stain resistant than even the best synthetic fibres due to the coating of light wax on each fibre, making your rug easier to clean. Due to its high protein and moisture content Wool is naturally flame retardant and exhibits a lower flame spread than synthetic fibres.
A heat set polypropylene rug is one in which the yarn is processed to produce soft fibers that are resistant to wear and tear and repel stains. This type of rug is antistatic, which makes vacuuming easier because animal hairs and lint don't easily adhere to the fibers.
Polyester yarn is a bi-product of oil refinement and has similar characteristics to Heat-Set Polypropylene yarn. Polyester yarn can be spun thinner (finer) and has shiny (silk look) properties.
Viscose is a fibre made from regenerated wood cellulose. Viscose rayon is structurally similar to cotton, a soft man-made fibre commonly used in clothes, upholstery and carpets.Viscose has very similar properties to silk, it is shiny and soft but it does not have the same elasticity as other yarns and if used in large quantity. Viscose is often mixed with wool or other yarns to give more elasticity it.
Jute, also known as hessian, is a long vegetable fiber spun into coarse strands that is commonly used to make burlap fabric. These natural fiber rugs are often handwoven using hessian and other plant fibers, making beautiful organic home decor pieces.
- HS Polypropylene & HS Polyester
Synthetic rugs are a great choice for pet owners.
Polypropylene is a popular synthetic choice because rugs made of polypropylene are easy to clean and extremely durable. Additionally, polypropylene rugs are affordable and flexible when it comes to style. You won’t have to worry about pet stains either because polypropylene is non-absorbent. With correct care, you will get years of use from your polypropylene rug, even with pets.
- Wool
Wool is a very pet friendly rug material. It is overall easy to clean and vacuum, making it a great rug material when you have pets. If you choose to purchase a rug made of wool, make sure you have some money put aside, since wool rugs can be pricey. If your cat or dog has an accident or get your rug dirty, clean it up as best you can before it sets in the wool. If your pet or pets shed, you may want to get a rug close to the color of their fur, so that it blends in. Or, be ready to vacuum the rug when it gets too dirty.
